Review: Meiji Candy

Post-Valentine's is always a time for candy-obsessed people to go shopping since the prices are slashed off. I am not one of those people, and I buy my candy before Valentine's, haha.

When me and my brother went to the mall on the 13th, I saw this weird-looking Japanese candy named Meiji, and in spite of my oath to stop making unnecessary purchases (which I have still yet to master - spent too much that day, ugh), I picked it up.

Meiji minis (ooh, sounds like a girl band or something, haha)

The experience was... bland, so to say. I knew they were going to be sweet, but I wasn't sure by how much and if I was going to get poisoned (kidding). Here's what I think.

Candy 1: Marble

I could not read anything on the box aside from "Meiji" and "Marble", so let's call it the latter instead.  They look like M&M's but more pastel in color and more slippery to grasp.

A breakdown of how each color tastes:

Blue - Tastes like normal chocolate-filled candy, but with a slight sour after-taste
Red - Ugh. NO.
Green - Too sour for my taste. I could barely make out the chocolate.
Yellow - Less sour than the green one. More of a citrus flavor, too.
Pink - The pink was generally okay, and I couldn't distinguish the difference between this and the blue one.

Overall taste: It's like a block of Cadbury mixed with a whole lot of Nerds (I like them separate, thank you).

Candy 2: Coffee Beat

I love having coffee every now and then, so this was a treat. It smelled like coffee, and it tasted like one too (thank GOD).

If you've ever tasted (and loved) Starbucks' CoffeeJelly Frappe, you're sure to like these pops as well. It first fills your mouth with that strong coffee taste (bitter but bearable), but after a while, it starts to get that familiar coffee jelly sourness.

Overall taste: Though I'd suck on these once in a while, it's not something I'd go crazy about. At least it's better than Marble.

Candy 3: Choco Baby

Less than bite-sized, these babies (pun intended, haha) don't pack enough flavor. Sure, you get a few seconds of 5% sweetness and then poof, it's all back to nothing.

I had to take at least 5 pieces to get more flavor out of this. It just tasted like dark chocolate but less bitter and more like, "What am I actually eating?".

Overall taste: None. Except for when you fill your mouth with them. Leaves you bitter, more in the heart than the mouth.

Candy 4: Apollo

Apollo would be disappointed to be linked to this, to put it bluntly.

Look, I like strawberry in certain forms, but this tasted like a cheaper version of Cadbury's Fruit & Nut chocolate. It took me a while to come to terms with that one, and this one might take even longer. The strawberry flavor was there, but the mix wasn't right.

Overall taste: Sorry, Apollo.

So there you go, a review of some Meiji candy. While I love Japanese candy in general (and a select choice of Japanese items), most of these don't make the cut. Still, I'm willing to pick up the next weird-looking candy when I go to the mall and do another review. Any suggestions?

  1. That's the best thing about post-valentines right? Discounted chocolates! Score! Haha. I personally quite like the last one but they are a bit pricey. I should give the others a taste too!

    1. Hahaha! I agree, but my favorites don't usually have post-valentines sales, unfortunately. Yep, the coffee one tastes great! I find myself popping one or two whenever I'm surfing the net.

  2. Good review you have here! Meiji is the company behind the famous Yan-Yan and Hello Panda. Both of these are quite delicious and it has an addictive taste. However, these new set of candies are a little bit surreal and weird for me. The Marble Meiji reminds me of Bean Boozled, the famous jellybean with odd flavors such as baby wipes, vomit and booger. Yep you read it right, booger. Haha. That's quite similar with Marble. The Coffee Beat is quite amusing though, it resembles literally a coffee bean! HAHA which I find funny and cute at the same time. Overall I enjoyed these candy review and I do want to have a taste of each one soon but I'm not going to indulge into it regularly :)

    1. Yeah! I've had Bean Boozled before, too! I HATE vomit with a vengeance. Ugh. Coffe beat is definitely cute, haha. Tiny versions of coffee beans. This was a spur of the moment type of review. I was incredibly bored one day and thought hey, why not review these things I got at the mall? haha.

  4. The marble looks like M&M and Nips. Different with taste I guess. I haven't seen this in the stores, though.

    1. Yes, they look similar, but more pastel in color and more bland in taste. :) Picked them up from SM Department Store. IDK if they sell these in ALL SM branches though.

  5. I've bought those whenever I want something cute but I prefer Meiji's dark chocolate bar and Meiji's chocolate covered macadamia or almonds.

    1. Awesome! Haha. Honeydukes sell weird candy, I love it. You can only get them from Universal, right? And Amazon? Not sure XD. Hmm. This makes me want to get some Cauldron Cakes. XD

  7. I admire you being honest about this. I’ve worked at Daiso Japan PH which is under Robinsons Retail Holdings - and in our business department, the Meiji candies and chocolates are the ones to have a lot of stocks. As in literally. Lots of people are going crazy about it - minus me and you. Hahaha. I still love the “true” sweet candies and chocolates (sneakers, hersheys , reeses, nerds). Hahaha.

    1. Oh my god, Hersheys. <3 And Ferrero too, right? Haha. REALLY? Nothing against people who like the others (except for Coffee Beat), but dang, they really sell that much? Wow. Weird. Haha. Hi there, fellow non-lover of these other candies. XD

    1. Everytime I pass by the candy section at SM, I see these Meiji minis, and it was only that day that I decided to get some and see how they tasted like. Not the best experience, but I think Coffee Beat made up for the others. I'd rather get a huge pack of those. Hehe. Coffee lover din ako! I'm quite addicted to anything espresso.

  13. Hi Veeyah. I'm still bothering you even on your blogspot haha. Well, Google+ took me to your blog. Might as well read your "meiji verdict" 😄. Let me comment on that. I love choco baby, tastes like M&M's, I love dark chocolates and please let the coffee beat be the star for our next meeting, or you could just slip it through my pocket when no one is looking hahaha.

  14. I like the Choco Babys so does my daughter and youngest son. Every Christmas I make sure to have these in their stockings. Apollo is alright to. Though I'd buy something else instead.
