My ASMR Journey (Plus New Favourites!)

If you've been with the blog for quite some time, you're most likely aware that I am a huge fan of ASMR. From 2016 until today, I have watched and listened to hundreds of videos that give me the tingles at the back of my neck, and I'm pleased to say that my taste has (yet again) evolved.

Now, if you have never heard of ASMR, you're in for a treat. If you'd like to know more, check out the first article I linked above and come back to this update! So, let's get to the meat of this post, shall we?

Disclaimer: You may have different triggers so my favourites might not be your cup of tea. The beauty of ASMR is that there's a video for everything and you can literally explore Youtube and Spotify and find the perfect one for you!

The Beginning

Back in 2016, ASMR was still an up-and-coming community. There were quite a few popular channels on Youtube but it wasn't as mainstream as it is now. Back then, people had no idea what 'ASMR' was, and explaining it to others was often difficult. I remember getting weird looks from people who asked as if it was some sort of illegal drug that should only be consumed underground, haha!

Now though, ASMR has become very popular. Since the pandemic hit last year, more and more people have turned to ASMR for comfort and the community has grown so much. As for me, it's been a staple in my bedtime routine and going to bed without playing a video or two feels wrong now.

If you were able to check out the links at the beginning of this post, you'll find that my triggers have evolved. I started from the basics (at least for me): a paint knife hitting the palette and mixing colours, Reiki healing, brush sounds on the microphone. After a while, I moved on to medical checkups, getting my makeup done, eye triggers, and so much more. (The only ones I have never really liked are the food videos. They creep me the hell out, lol.)

The (Slight) Evolution

These days, my taste hasn't deviated from the medical roleplays (although I have a better understanding of my triggers now). As far as I'm concerned, getting checkups and personal attention are some of the best ASMR videos the space has to offer.

Some people might consider it weird to feel relaxed when someone's literally checking you for "flaws" or neurological issues, but in my case, it's incredibly comfortable. The more accurate the roleplays are, the more it triggers those tingles.

Want to try some out? I've got a few videos you can start with below!

1. Physical Medical Exam for Anxiety Relief by DireHit ASMR

I had exhausted every video from my favourite ASMRtists one night and as I was browsing the search results, I saw this video. I initially got attracted to how crisp the video and thumbnail looked, but after a few minutes, I realised I had struck gold.

He had the right amount of professionalism and balanced it with a charming personality. His voice didn't hurt my ears (as some male ASMRtists do) and you could tell he prepared for the video and invested on tools to make his roleplay much more realistic. His lighting wasn't intense and the light triggers were just perfect.

2. Doctor Performs a Full & Complete Cranial Nerve Exam on You by Dr. Adam ASMR

This video also gave me great tingles at the back of my neck. Not only does he sound very friendly, professional, and caring, he's also a real life doctor. Yeah. Knowing that he actually knows what he's talking about every video brings me so much comfort!

As you can probably tell from the thumbnail, he also put in great effort to produce a quality roleplay and the little noises his microphone picks up are divine. I can already tell he's going to be a big channel one day. :)

3. The Most Relaxing Medical Exam by Made In France ASMR

When I tell you I have never seen a more cinematically-produced, tingle-inducing, picture-perfect ASMR roleplay video (with so much charm you could practically see it dripping), you better be sure I mention this one.

This was utter perfection. The level of tingles I got from this video was off the charts the first time and even in the succeeding times I played it back, it produced nothing short of 'plenty'.

Imagine a visually, audibly appealing movie but make it ASMR. It's like Cannes Film Festival meets Made In France ASMR. The result is just too good to be free (or paid if you're on Youtube Red, haha).

I could tell you what other details make it one of the best ASMR videos on this list but it would be so much better if you experienced it yourself!

4. 15 Keyboards with Fast Typing for Studying and Work by ASMR PPOMO

As the only non-medical ASMR video on the list, this one was purely sound-based. I've grown to love typing sounds in the past couple of months and I get drowsy everytime I hear anyone type. (I even bought my own mechanical keyboard (blue switch) because I love the sound so much.)

What I love most about this video is that it features a number of keyboards that all sound different. Different switches and keycaps produce a variety of 'noises' and they're all tingle-inducing!

5. Intense Cranial Nerve Exam for Ultimate Tingles by Completely Casual ASMR

Last but not the least, this one is a recent addition that deserves a highlight. Much like the other medical roleplays I've grown to love, this video offers all those beautiful little ambient noises plus a calm "doctor" who is as professional as he is friendly. (And yes, it's another male.)

I've yet to explore this channel's videos but based on the few I've watched, I can tell they produce top-tier roleplays. Production-wise, it's definitely at the top of the list.

At this point, you've probably observed that I've shifted from female to male ASMRtists. This wasn't on purpose - it just so happens that male voices calm me so much more than feminine ones these days. I still enjoy videos from my female favourites but the tingles aren't as abundant as before. I have no idea why. I guess it's... seasonal?

I hope this post helps you explore ASMR and find your triggers! Once you go down the rabbit hole though, you'll never want to leave. :) If you're already a listener, what are your favourites? Let me know in the comments!
